NOTE: The Rangertell Rodette (referred to below several times) was a very successful manual tuned locator made by us two years ago. The Examiner is infinitely better being auto tune and allowing determination of distance, depth, shape and size of target. The Examiner uses a different type of Rodette 'engine' which is superior in many ways. It 's not subject to interference, inaccuracy due to covering and many other discrepancies due to broader frequencies. You could safely substitute Examiner for Rodette below and multiply the results by two.
MOST EFFICIENT WAY OF DISTANCE & LOCATION DETERMINATION USING EXAMINER
You don't need to get a complete revolution just an indication. It will only occur when the Examiner, target and your hand are in a straight line.
Note how the Examiner is held dipping a little so it climbs against gravity. This eliminates any error of balance.
Rangertell & THE BIG BOYS
One of the best known US LRL manufacturers took with him an assortment of locators for testing on a recent expedition. Some of them are shown in the photo. The R-T Rodette is visible in the bottom right. It performed well and held it's lock longer than other more expensive models. This was despite the fact it is the lowest-priced model available. The Examiner is even better and features auto-tune, the Rodette manual. The photo represents the most famous locators since the form began in the mid-80s. Under the Rodette can be seen a Rangertell Goldscrew and two special R-T tunable rods.

Jun 7, 2003 -- Hardpan from Arizona writes:
"We were up at our cabin last weekend enjoying the daytime high of 72, while here at home in Phoenix it was a warm 110 degrees. While we were there, my son and I hiked up to an old mine armed with the Examiner and a detector. I didn't get any signals near the workings or dump, and that did not surprise me, as the old timers had done a pretty good job of taking all the ore in the vein from the surface down to the water table where only sulfide ore continues. I thought I'd hit the dump with the detector anyway, and got a strong signal on the proximal side of the dump. Being very loud, it was easy to locate. It was a fist sized chunk of ore with some pyrite showing. Not surprising in sulfide ore, and it is possible to have free-milling gold in sulfides, though rare. I had doubts because the Examiner had not given any signal in the dump area, but with a signal this strong, I thought I'd better take it home anyway. I soaked it in acid and then slowly peeled it away, a layer at a time to check for gold. No free gold, just very rich in gold sulfides, reassuring me the Examiner did not miss any metallic gold. Best Regards, Hardpan."

Great eliminating Hardpan. Good luck with your next expedition. Ranger.
Nuggets they're finding...this time with the Rodette.
Hey Ranger,
I was out just two weeks ago and found some gold ore, you may remember. Anyway it proved real good. I was camping for three days in the Bradshaw Mts. north of Phoenix. The first day I brought down ten rocks among other things, I'm a artefacts hunter also. I put them on my Little Smoki grill after the fire was max. The next day I did the same thing.
On the third morning the fire still hot I poured cold water on it and heard the rocks crack. I poured the contense on a pc. of scrap metal roofing and continued in the outback. Several hrs. later when I returned everything was cool and I poured it in a plastic bucket after removing the heavy stuff. When I returned home I panned out the contents. To my surprise I got five nice size nuggets and several small pickers.
You can use my info. if you want to help anyone else.
Thanks, Charlie Marandina, Phoenix, Arizona.
G'day Ranger,
My Rodette that I bought from you was under about 8 feet of river water in my recent flood. The foam handle pad is caked with mud and the operating instruction sheet disintegrated. Seems to still move freely. How much to mail me a new foam grip and instruction sheet? I've been shovelling muck and waterlogged books and ripping out drywall for many weeks now. Still working the maps for friends and they are reporting good results. Thanks so much for your help.
Harley Bissell- Indiana
I guess if it didn't work Harley wouldn't be wanting a handle. Although the Rodette is not advertised as waterproof it will resist water quite well. The beauty of not having power in the form of batteries means less chance of damage in such events. Don't do this at home.
